Located directly south of Calgary, the Municipal District of Foothills is considered a rural municipality. It covers an overall area of around 3600 square kilometers in the southern portion of sunny Alberta. The locality surrounds a number of towns in the area, including Turner Valley, Black Diamond, Okotoks, the Village of Longview, the Eden Valley Reserve, and Okotoks. In 2004 the district became 50 years old and in 2006 it was discovered that the population was close to 20,000.
The district is proud to provide a number of services, both on it's own or with the help of adjoining municipalities. The residents of the area are provided the same services associated with living in a city, planning and road construction, fire protection, emergency ambulance service, disposal of garbage, parks and recreation, community support services, and enforcement of bylaws. Water services are also provided in Aldersyde, Cayley, and Blackie.
The staff of the municipal district are charged with administering the Foothills Regional Commission, which operates the local waste management facility and the effluent pumping system.
The municipality takes care of around 2000 kimometers of roadway. Two of the largest highways in Alberta, Highway 2 and 22, run through the district. This provides extremely easy access north and south to the US. The ease of access to the Rockies and the world class city of Calgary makes the district an amazing location for all types of business. We are proud to be one of the fastest growing areas in the entire province.
The province as a whole has the lowest taxes in the entire country, including the lack of a provincial tax on sales. The Municipal District of Foothills does not impose a tax on business.
Over the weeks, we will be creating information about the following areas of the Municipal District of Footfills:
| Heritage Pointe | Cottonwood | DeWinton Heights | Red Deer Lake |
